After a machine gun style Tweeting pace, StockShowWonka has taken a three day break. Coming from somebody who took just about all of last week off, it might be strange to say the party is over, but I'm going to guess the party is over. There was more going on behind the scenes with that than most people realize.
So who killed it?
Was it you? It's okay, you can admit it, nobody even knows if there's a dead body let alone where it is.
It wasn’t me, at least not knowingly. Back in her heyday (you know, last Monday) I actually tried hiring her. Strictly speaking, I still don't know for sure who she is.
Who knows, perhaps this tweet…
…in which the person who got nearly 2,000 followers in two weeks by copycatting a year old internet meme bemoans the fact that her gimmick is being copied was so astoundingly ironic that it caused the earth to open up and swallow the account.
Frankly, if it IS over, it was only a matter of time. She was saying things that while funny, cut just a bit too close to the bone and her deep desire to remain anonymous was a strong indicator that she didn’t have the fortitude to stand behind what she was saying.
Speaking as a guy who has made one or two enemies in his day, it can be a bit stressful. There are rules to mocking people and still being able to show your face in public. First and foremost, it needs to be something worthy of mocking. Making fun of people because their cattle aren’t up to your standard isn’t very nice and it's not something I do. Making fun of them because of their misleading marketing? Fair game.
Secondly, publicly making fun of kids because they don’t know what they are doing doesn’t make you witty or funny, it makes you an a-hole. No, not the self-deprecating type of a-hole I take pride in being labeled, I mean a legitimate straight up a-hole.
The closest I’ve come to crossing that line that was the “
leave the ear tag in” post which was actually making fun of dads who leave the tag in as some sort of status symbol and the “
honest grand champion interview” that was making fun of the fact that the money is so preposterous in this show steer stuff that kids just naturally know they’re supposed to lie to the public about it. You’re never going to catch me calling kids “Freddy 4-H” or making fun of them for wearing Wranglers.
There’s still one more big difference.
If, as some people think the above examples do, I cross those lines……I put my name on it and take responsibility for my actions. It's not fun facing the people you've just run though the dirt (okay, sometimes it actually is) but it's something adults do. It's also something you get to conveniently avoid when you hide behind an anonymous Twitter persona.
I say all of this because there are a few of those anonymous Twitter accounts starting to pop up thanks in large part to Stockshow Wonka’s wild fire success. If by chance one of you reading this is behind one of them, more power to you. It’s about time there was a more diverse offering of cattle oriented entertainment online. I just have one small request…
If you are going to post stuff on the internet that “slams” people or makes fun of kids…
PUT YOUR NAME ON IT OR SHUT YOUR STUPID MOUTH.
*that last line was better until my wife made me change it.
**somebody BETTER acknowledge the numerous levels of humor in my Wonka meme.
***I don't think our readers over 40 can read anything I write down here.
