Weighted Average Auction report of Canton, North Wilkesboro, Norwood, Shelby, Siler
City, Smithfield and Turnersburg for the Week Ending Thursday Oct 1, 2015
Cattle Receipts: 3156 Last week: 5065 Last Year: 5424
Compared to last week, slaughter cows were 3.00 to 10.00 lower, bulls mostly 2.00 to
5.00 lower. Feeder cattle were sharply lower. Demand was light on lighter than
average offerings. Quality ranged from plain to average.
Auction receipts were lighter than normal this week due to declining futures,
reluctance of producers to market cattle at current prices and rain and wet
conditions. Rain has fallen every day in most areas of the state since last Thursday.
More rain is expected through Monday. The state is preparing for possible impacts of
Hurricane Joaquin. Even if it does not hit directly, massive amounts of rain are
expected.
Slaughter cows made up 21 percent of the offering, slaughter bulls 2 percent,
replacement cows 3 percent, other cows 0 percent, and feeders 73 percent. The feeder
supply included 36 percent steers, 36 percent heifers, and 28 percent bulls. Near 18
percent of the run weighed over 600 lbs.
